In the early morning hours of November 1, 2001, Hyun Jong Song, a 21-year-old Pennsylvania State University student, vanished from State College, Pennsylvania. Known to her friends as Cindy, she had been enjoying a Halloween party at a downtown nightclub with friends. She was dressed in a rabbit costume, consisting of a pink sleeveless shirt, a white tennis skirt with a cotton tail, brown suede knee-high boots, and a red hooded parka. After leaving the party around 2:00 a.m., she and her friends went to another friend's apartment for a couple of hours. A friend then drove her home to her apartment at the State College Park Apartments on West Clinton Avenue, dropping her off at approximately 4:00 a.m. She had been drinking and was mildly intoxicated. Evidence suggests she made it inside her apartment; her backpack and cell phone were found there, along with the false eyelashes she had worn as part of her costume. However, her purse, containing her keys, credit cards, and driver's license, was missing. There were no signs of a struggle or forced entry at her residence. When Hyun Jong Song failed to show up for her job and did not contact anyone for three days, her friends reported her missing on November 4, 2001. The investigation that followed explored several avenues. Authorities received a tip from a woman in Philadelphia who claimed to have seen a woman matching Song's description in a vehicle with a man in the city's Chinatown district. The witness stated that the woman appeared to be in distress and called for help before the man intervened. However, investigators found the witness's story to be inconsistent and were unable to verify the sighting. Police also considered that Song may have walked to a nearby 24-hour supermarket, a habit of hers, but the store's surveillance tapes had already been recorded over by the time they were checked. There has been no activity on her credit cards since her disappearance. Years later, a disturbing lead emerged connecting Song's case to convicted serial killer Hugo Selenski. An informant claimed that Selenski and an accomplice had abducted and murdered a young Asian woman around the time Song disappeared. A search of Selenski's property uncovered the remains of multiple individuals, but none were identified as Hyun Jong Song. Despite this lead, no definitive evidence has linked Selenski to her case. The disappearance of Hyun Jong Song remains an unsolved case, a painful void for her family and friends. With few solid clues, the narrative of what happened after she entered her apartment remains unfinished, leaving a community with the enduring question of what became of the bright and promising university student who vanished into the night.
