In the late winter of 1993, a promising young man named Andrew Karis, a 19-year-old student at Carnegie Mellon University, vanished from his life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Andrew, known to friends and family as Andy, Drew, or Sparky, was last seen on the university's campus on March 1, 1993. At the time, he was a junior majoring in Electrical Engineering. Standing at five feet eight inches with brown hair and hazel eyes, Andrew was described as a perfectionist and a private individual with a small circle of friends. In the time leading up to his disappearance, he had expressed to his mother over the phone that he was struggling with the pressures of his coursework and commitments at his fraternity. Following his last sighting in Pittsburgh, a trail of electronic transactions suggested a journey eastward. Investigators discovered that Andrew might have bought a Greyhound bus ticket to New York City on March 2, 1993. His credit card was subsequently used at a hotel in the city, and his ATM card was also used in Manhattan, requiring his correct PIN. These transactions continued until March 6. After these dates, the trail grew cold for a brief period before a final, heart-wrenching contact with his family. On March 14, Andrew placed a call to his mother, who lived in San Francisco. He sounded distraught and asked her to pick him up at the intersection of 3rd and Geary. His mother rushed to search for him at both 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue where they cross Geary, but Andrew was nowhere to be found. He has not been seen or heard from since that day. In the wake of his disappearance, Andrew's mother traveled to his dormitory in Pittsburgh, searching for any clue that might point to his whereabouts or state of mind. There, she found a piece of paper with a concerning list written on it: "George Washington Bridge Half Dome Golden Gate Bridge." This discovery raised fears that Andrew may have been contemplating suicide. Despite investigations being launched in Pittsburgh, New York, and San Francisco, no definitive answers have ever come to light. There has been no activity on his bank accounts or Social Security number since March 1993. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are considered suspicious by law enforcement. In January 2004, with no new leads or evidence of his whereabouts, Andrew Karis was declared legally dead. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, an overview of a young man who, after expressing his struggles, embarked on a cross-country journey that ended in an unnerving silence, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions.
