In May of 2003, a 50-year-old Canadian psychotherapist named Randal Paul Gary embarked on a vacation, boarding the cruise ship Veendam in Ketchikan, Alaska. A resident of Ontario, Canada, Randal was described as a very private person. The cruise was intended to be a time of relaxation, with stops planned in the Alaskan cities of Juneau and Skagway. However, Randal did not disembark at either of these ports of call. He was known to frequent the ship's casino, often staying up late. The last time he was seen by anyone was at 10:30 p.m. on May 16, 2003, which was the final day of the cruise. When the Veendam docked in Vancouver, British Columbia, Randal was nowhere to be found. A check of his cabin revealed a puzzling scene. All of his personal belongings, including his passport, wallet, cash, credit cards, driver's license, and crucial insulin for his diabetes, were left behind. The key card needed to access the room was also in the cabin. The room itself had a single sealed window and no balcony, making an exit from there unlikely. The "do not disturb" sign had been on his door for a significant portion of the trip, and while the bed appeared to have been sat on, it had not been slept in. Curiously, three partially empty bottles of alcohol were found, which was unusual as Randal rarely drank and the types of alcohol were not ones he was known to like. Investigators from the Vancouver police were tasked with unraveling the mystery of Randal's disappearance. The theory of suicide was considered but ultimately seemed improbable to those who knew him. Randal had no history of mental illness and had been in good spirits, with no apparent personal issues. It was also noted that if he had intended to take his own life, he could have done so with his insulin. The circumstances surrounding his vanishing from the cruise ship are perplexing, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. The case remains an unsolved mystery, a quiet and unsettling disappearance from a vessel at sea, with a man who was on vacation simply ceasing to be seen.
