In the summer of 2023, the quiet community of Sand Lake, Michigan, became the backdrop for a story of concern and a heart-wrenching search. Scott Allen Weldon, a 61-year-old man from Plainfield Township, was last seen on July 9, 2023. The alarm was officially raised ten days later when a relative of Weldon's contacted the Kent County Sheriff's Department. They had received a letter from him that was deeply troubling, sparking immediate fears for his well-being. Family members communicated that Weldon had been grappling with depression and had made comments about "going up north". This, combined with the contents of the letter, created a distressing picture for both his loved ones and the authorities who began to investigate his sudden disappearance. The investigation into Weldon's whereabouts began swiftly, with detectives from the Kent County Sheriff's Office piecing together his last known movements. Analysis of his phone records provided a crucial, albeit limited, timeline. Data showed his phone was in the vicinity of US-131 and 10 Mile at 8:36 a.m. on July 18, 2023, and then further north near US-131 and the 22 Mile area about an hour later. After this point, the digital trail went cold. Investigators explored the theory that Weldon may have hitchhiked, potentially with a walking stick or cane, to continue his journey northward. Despite extensive searches across Kent County and other northern counties, numerous interviews, and reviews of digital evidence, months turned into years with no sign of Weldon, and the case grew cold as no new leads emerged. The painful uncertainty for Scott Weldon's family came to a somber end in February 2026. On the 24th of that month, an individual walking through a wooded area near US-131 and West River Drive in Plainfield Township discovered human remains. The location was described as being thick with brush, not easily visible from roads or common pathways, which explained why he had not been found sooner. The remains were significantly decomposed, and the individual was found wearing hunting camouflage clothing. Through a comparison of medical records, the Kent County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police confirmed the remains belonged to Scott Weldon. The initial investigation had learned that the letter Weldon sent to his family indicated he was suicidal and did not wish to be found. The Kent County Medical Examiner later ruled his manner of death as a suicide, bringing a tragic conclusion to a search that spanned more than two years and provided long-awaited, though heartbreaking, answers for his family.
