On the evening of April 15, 1983, 23-year-old Karen Schepers was in high spirits. A computer programmer at First Chicago Bank Card in Elgin, Illinois, she joined a group of colleagues to celebrate some recent promotions at P.M. Bentley's tavern in nearby Carpentersville.
