On the morning of March 7, 1983, a 14-year-old girl named Tracy Ann Byrd was dropped off at Bensalem High School in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, by her mother's boyfriend, Paul Greenwald. Tracy, a ninth-grader with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes, was dressed in a shirt and jeans. Unbeknownst to her family, she had been suspended from school and was not permitted to attend classes until her mother met with the principal. After Greenwald left, Tracy reportedly tried to convince some friends to skip school with her, but they declined. She was never seen or heard from again. Initially, her disappearance was treated as a runaway case, a theory supported by the fact that she had run away once before for a single night after an argument with her mother. There were several unconfirmed sightings of her in the area, but these were later dismissed by police as likely being a girl who resembled Tracy. Before she vanished, Tracy had confided in a friend that she might be pregnant, though this has never been confirmed. The case took a devastating turn seven months after Tracy's disappearance when her mother, Jean Louise Byrd, also went missing. Jean was last seen in October 1983 at her son's apartment complex in Bensalem Township. Her body was discovered on October 18, 1983, in a shallow grave in Blackbird State Forest in Delaware; she had been strangled. The investigation into Jean's murder quickly focused on Paul Greenwald, with whom she had a troubled and violent history. In 1980, Greenwald had kidnapped Jean at knifepoint, leading police on a chase before he was apprehended. Despite this, Jean testified on his behalf, and he received probation. After Jean ended their relationship for a second time, Greenwald reportedly began stalking her. He was eventually arrested and charged with Jean's murder. In March 1986, just before he was to be sentenced for Jean's death, Paul Greenwald died by suicide in his prison cell. He had admitted to killing Jean but denied any involvement in Tracy's disappearance. With his death, many questions about what happened to Tracy were left unanswered. Tracy's family and friends never believed she was a runaway, stating that she would have eventually contacted someone and would not have missed her own mother's funeral. The investigation into her disappearance has remained open over the decades, with detectives exploring various leads. At one point, a detective announced a new person of interest, a man from Bucks County, but no charges have ever been filed. The case of Tracy Ann Byrd is a complex and tragic story that began with a teenage girl's disappearance and was compounded by the murder of her mother, leaving a family with decades of uncertainty and a community with an enduring mystery.
