In the spring of 2001, a young mother named Kimyala Henson and her two daughters, two-year-old Shaina Ashley Kirkpatrick and two-month-old Shausha Latine Henson, vanished from their home in Portland, Oregon. On April 4, 2001, the family of three embarked on what was supposed to be a trip to Canada with Kimyala's childhood friend, Christina Noel Mayer, and Mayer's boyfriend, Frank Lee Oehring. The group first traveled south to Sacramento, California, where Kimyala obtained a copy of her birth certificate, a document Mayer and Oehring may have convinced her she needed for the Canadian border crossing. Shaina and Shausha were last seen with their mother on that day, and what followed was a series of tragic events that left investigators with a complex and disturbing case. The first grim discovery in the case came on April 20, 2001, at a rest stop in Collier County, Florida. There, authorities found Christina Mayer and Frank Oehring in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. Mayer had been fatally shot, and Oehring died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after being found. Inside their vehicle, investigators found Kimyala Henson's wallet, credit cards, and her recently acquired birth certificate, which had been torn in half. A diaper bag was also recovered, but there was no sign of Shaina or Shausha, and their car seats were missing. Evidence soon emerged that Mayer had been using Kimyala's identity. The investigation took an even darker turn on April 28, 2001, when Kimyala's body was found partially buried in a rural area near Pyramid Lake in Nevada. She had been brutally murdered, having been bludgeoned with a hatchet and shot to death. Ballistics confirmed she was killed with the same weapon used in the Florida murder-suicide, solidifying the belief that Mayer and Oehring were responsible for her death. A bloodstained hatchet found in the couple's car was later confirmed to have Kimyala's blood on it, but no traces of the children's blood were found. The disappearance of Shaina Kirkpatrick and Shausha Henson remains an agonizing mystery. Investigators believe that Mayer and Oehring traveled to Florida by themselves, as motel receipts from their journey did not indicate the children were with them. It has also been reported that Oehring was a fugitive from Missouri, wanted for the attempted murder of his ex-wife, and was allegedly the leader of a Satanist group of which Mayer was a member. While a motive for Kimyala's murder has not been definitively established, it is clear that stealing her identity was part of the plan. The fate of her two young daughters is a question that has haunted their family and law enforcement for years. Despite extensive searches in the area where their mother's body was found and investigations across multiple states, no trace of Shaina and Shausha has ever been found. The prevailing theories are that the children were either murdered or sold to other individuals. The case is a heart-wrenching overview of a mother's life cut short and the enduring uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of her innocent children.
