In the late summer of 1985, a 35-year-old woman named Carolann Payne, also known as Nikki, vanished from the wooded areas of La Pine in Deschutes County, Oregon. The exact date of her disappearance remains uncertain, as she was living a transient lifestyle at the time, without a permanent home, bank account, or credit cards. Payne, a mother of two who was twice divorced, was known to keep in touch with her family, typically calling them at least once every month or two. However, after August 1985, her calls ceased, and she has not used her Social Security number or had any contact with law enforcement since. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, she had lived in several states, including Iowa, Illinois, and California, and had experience working as a waitress, bartender, sales associate, and dog groomer. At the time she went missing, she was living with her boyfriend, Joel Terrence Abbott, in a travel trailer near La Pine. The investigation into Carolann's disappearance eventually uncovered a history of violence. Friends and acquaintances of Abbott described him as having a volatile temper, particularly towards women, and it was revealed that he had previously assaulted Payne with a knife. A significant breakthrough in the case came when a friend of Abbott, acting as a police informant, secretly recorded him confessing to her murder. In these recordings, Abbott admitted to shooting Payne in the back and head with a high-powered rifle in a remote part of the county and later returning to bury her body. He also recounted the same horrific story to his ex-wife. This confession, coupled with the testimony of those who knew of his violent nature, led to his arrest in May 1992 after a lengthy investigation by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. In 1993, Joel Terrence Abbott was convicted of the murder of Carolann Payne and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. His conviction was a landmark case for Deschutes County, as it was the first time a murder verdict was returned without the victim's body being found. Initially, he was convicted of aggravated murder, but the charge was later reduced to intentional murder because there was insufficient evidence to prove the kidnapping element necessary for the more severe charge. Despite extensive searches, Carolann Payne's remains have never been located, and prosecutors believe Abbott went to great lengths to conceal them. The case is officially classified as a "no body" homicide. Abbott died in prison in 2016. The disappearance of Carolann Payne is a somber case that highlights the tragedy of domestic violence and the challenges of prosecuting a murder without the recovery of the victim's body. Although a conviction was secured, the lack of closure for her family remains, as her final resting place is still unknown.
