In April 1994, 23-year-old Karen Denise Wells, a single mother from Haskell, Oklahoma, embarked on a cross-country road trip to visit a childhood friend in Bergen, New Jersey. She left her 14-month-old son in the care of her parents on April 10th and set off in a rented white 1993 Plymouth Acclaim. After getting lost multiple times and driving for over 20 hours, a weary Karen decided to stop for the night in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on April 12th. She checked into the Pike Motel and was in contact with her friend, Melissa, with whom she made plans to meet at the motel around midnight. At approximately 8:00 p.m., Karen spoke to Melissa on the phone, mentioning she was going to get food at a nearby McDonald's before returning to her room to sleep. A motel employee saw her drive away in her rental car, which was the last confirmed sighting of Karen Wells. When Melissa arrived at the Pike Motel shortly after midnight on April 13th, she found no answer at Karen's room. A motel clerk let her into the room where they discovered all of Karen's belongings, including her suitcase open on the bed and her room key. The bed did not appear to have been slept in, and there was no sign of Karen. Early that same morning, her rented Plymouth Acclaim was found abandoned about 35 miles away on a rural stretch of Route 274 in Perry County. The car's doors were open, it was out of gas, and the battery was dead. The vehicle was splattered with mud and had scratches, suggesting it had been driven off-road. Inside the car were some personal items, fast-food wrappers, and a small amount of marijuana. Notably, the car's odometer showed an extra 600 to 700 miles that could not be accounted for by her trip from Oklahoma. The investigation into Karen's disappearance has been fraught with perplexing clues and a lack of substantial leads. Her purse was later found in a ditch near the abandoned car. A strange and unconfirmed report emerged around Thanksgiving of 1994, when the wife of a man Karen had been seeing claimed to have received a phone call from someone alleging to be Karen, stating she had gotten married and would not be returning home. Law enforcement, however, does not believe this call was actually from Karen. Over the years, investigators have considered the possibility that individuals with knowledge of the case have been hesitant to come forward due to potential involvement in criminal activity. Despite the passage of time, Karen's family has continued to hope for answers. Her son, who was just a baby when she vanished, was raised by his grandparents. The case remains an active and unsolved missing person investigation, with foul play suspected. Karen Denise Wells was declared legally dead in 1994.
