On a brisk autumn day, November 21, 2001, 16-year-old Kami Luella Vollendroff and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Eugene Hyatt, vanished from the scenic but treacherous Oregon coast. The young couple, who resided in Stayton, Oregon, were visiting Hyatt's grandparents at their oceanfront condominium in Depoe Bay. Around 10:00 a.m., they informed his grandparents of their plans to explore the nearby tide pools at Boiler Bay State Park. This was the last time anyone reported seeing or hearing from them. At the time of her disappearance, Kami was described as a white female, 5'7" tall and weighing around 130 pounds, with brown hair that had blonde streaks, blue eyes, and pierced ears. She was last seen wearing a white sweatshirt and black pants. The initial theory from law enforcement was that a powerful wave tragically swept Kami and Eugene out to sea, a plausible scenario given that a storm had hit the area around the time they went missing. This belief was seemingly supported by the discovery of one of Eugene's shoes near Boiler Bay Cove, a rocky inlet less than a mile from their last known location, a few days after they disappeared. The Oregon coast is known for its dangerous sneaker waves, especially from late fall to early spring, a period when the Pacific Ocean is particularly rough. Despite extensive searches, neither Kami nor Eugene's bodies were ever recovered. Over the years, the absence of remains has led to questions and alternative theories. Kami's grandmother expressed her doubts about the drowning theory, a sentiment she said was shared by the Coast Guard, finding it unusual that two individuals could be taken by the ocean without either body being found. This led to speculation about the possibility of foul play. A significant development occurred three years after their disappearance when a photograph in an advertisement caught the attention of Kami's grandmother, who believed the model bore a striking resemblance to her granddaughter. An investigator and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also reportedly noted a strong similarity. However, this lead was eventually closed after the modeling agency provided documentation confirming the individual in the photograph was not Kami. The disappearance of Kami Vollendroff and Eugene Hyatt remains an unresolved case, leaving their families with lingering questions about the true fate of the two teenagers who went for a walk by the sea and never returned.
