On May 27, 2002, a Memorial Day weekend turned tragic for the Malia family when 32-year-old Joel Malia, along with his two brothers, Jeffrey, 35, and James, 20, disappeared following a boating accident off the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey. The three brothers were enjoying a trip on their recently purchased high-performance speedboat, a 37-foot Douglas Skater Catamaran named 'Bad Kat'.
