In the summer of 1989, 30-year-old Barbara Elizabeth Miller, a mother to a young son, disappeared from her home in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a community and a case that would remain shrouded in mystery for decades. On July 1st of that year, she was planning to attend a friend's wedding. While there are some conflicting accounts, it is believed she did attend the ceremony and was even photographed there before she was last seen. She is thought to have returned to her Penn Street residence in the early morning hours of July 2. The last known clothing she was seen wearing was a blue spaghetti strap dress with a white shirt, and she may have been wearing several turquoise rings. A distinctive tattoo of a rose with the letters "HD" for Harley Davidson was on her right shoulder. The circumstances leading up to Barbara's disappearance were fraught with peril. She had been acting as a police informant, providing authorities with information about drug trafficking. This dangerous role resulted in her receiving threatening letters warning her to stop cooperating with law enforcement. About two weeks before she vanished, she informed the police that the matter had been resolved and requested they end their investigation into the threats. In addition to the external dangers, Barbara reportedly feared for her life in the days leading up to her disappearance, specifically expressing fear of her ex-boyfriend, a former Sunbury police detective named Joseph "Mike" Egan, with whom she lived. It was Egan who officially reported her missing. The investigation into Barbara Miller's disappearance has spanned decades, marked by periods of inactivity and renewed hope. In 2002, with no sign of her and her body never found, Barbara was legally declared dead, and the case was reclassified as a homicide. Joseph Egan has consistently been named by investigators as the lead suspect in her case, though he has denied any involvement. The case gained significant new attention in 2017 and 2018 when law enforcement conducted extensive searches based on new leads. Investigators, including the FBI, excavated a concrete wall in the basement of a Milton home where Egan's sister lived at the time of Barbara's disappearance. Cadaver dogs had indicated the possible presence of human remains. Further searches were conducted at Barbara's former home in Sunbury, where steps showing evidence of hair and blood were removed. Despite these efforts and the discovery of what was termed "potential evidence," no definitive conclusions have been publicly announced, and no arrests have been made. The case is also potentially linked to the 1986 killing of a man named Rickey Wolfe, as some believe Barbara had information about that homicide. The overall investigation into what happened to Barbara Miller has been a long and complex one, leaving her loved ones, including her son, without answers for over thirty years.
