In the late hours of September 11, 1991, 33-year-old Teresa Ann Gruetter was last seen at her residence in Boring, Oregon. She lived in her home on Southeast Hamlet Drive with her sister and her young son. The following morning, her sister awoke around 6:30 a.m. to find that Teresa was not in the house and her bed had not been slept in. Adding to the concern, Teresa's car remained parked in the driveway and her ten-year-old son was still asleep in the home. The situation became more alarming when Teresa's employer from Ott's Friction Supply Inc. in Portland called to report that she had not arrived for her secretarial job. It was highly uncharacteristic of Teresa to leave without any explanation, especially given her responsibilities as a mother to her son and a seven-year-old daughter who lived with her father. Her sister promptly reported her missing to the authorities. The investigation into Teresa's disappearance quickly pointed towards the possibility of foul play. There were no signs of forced entry at her home, but her purse was missing. Detectives soon focused their attention on one of her ex-boyfriends, Bruce Arlen Retchless, who became the primary suspect in her case. Retchless and Gruetter had lived together for a few months in 1990. Authorities learned that Retchless had a history of disturbing behavior towards women. In one instance from the mid-1980s, he had broken into a woman's home after cutting her electrical lines and left a rope on her bed. In 1988, another woman had accused him of rape, though charges were not pressed. His pattern of behavior reportedly continued after Teresa's disappearance, with another woman moving to a different state to get away from him, after which he allegedly called her family members incessantly. Despite the strong suspicions surrounding Retchless, he has never been charged in connection with Teresa Gruetter's disappearance. The case is being treated as a homicide, yet without sufficient evidence, it has remained unsolved for decades. Over the years, there has been speculation about her case, including online discussions suggesting a possible link to an unidentified deceased person known as "Bitter Creek Betty," who was found in Wyoming in 1992. However, physical discrepancies make this connection unlikely. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office continues to hold the case file for Teresa's disappearance, a poignant reminder of a young mother who vanished from her home one September night. The overview of the case is one of sudden and unexplained absence, a loving mother who seemingly disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a family searching for answers and a strong suspicion of foul play directed at an individual with a troubling past.
