On a fall evening, October 20, 2000, 86-year-old Hazel Lydia Chamblen was last seen in Winston, Oregon. A well-known community volunteer from Tenmile, she had driven her grandson to Douglas High School around 7:00 p.m. in her red 1990 Toyota Corolla station wagon. This seemingly routine act of grandmotherly care would be the last time she was ever seen by her loved ones. At the time of her disappearance, there were concerns that she may have been experiencing some mild memory loss. Known for her reliability, her failure to return home and the subsequent silence was deeply uncharacteristic and immediately alarmed her family. Almost a month after she vanished, a significant break in the case occurred when hunters discovered Hazel's red Toyota Corolla abandoned. The vehicle was found parked near a ravine in the remote Glen Creek area, miles from the dividing line between Douglas and Coos counties. An intensive search of the rugged terrain surrounding the car was launched, but tragically, it yielded no clues as to Hazel's whereabouts or what might have happened to her. The location of the car was puzzling to her family, who stated that she would not have driven to such an isolated area unless she was trying to help someone. This led to uncertainty among investigators as to whether she had driven the car there herself or if someone else was involved. The discovery of her car without any sign of Hazel only deepened the mystery of her disappearance. Investigators considered the possibility that she may have become disoriented due to her potential memory loss and wandered away from her vehicle. However, her family remained steadfast in their belief that she would not have simply left without a word. A year after she went missing, with no answers and no sign of Hazel, her family held a memorial service in her honor in October 2001. Despite the passage of time, Hazel Chamblen's case remains an active missing person investigation. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance, from the ordinary last sighting to the perplexing discovery of her abandoned car, have left her family and the community with unanswered questions and a sense of unresolved loss.
