On what seemed to be an ordinary Monday, December 27, 2010, 42-year-old David M. Mekvold went to his job at Standard Insurance in Portland, Oregon. He worked through at least part of the day, and his wife reported having a normal conversation with him on the phone at 1:30 p.m. After that phone call, David was never seen or heard from again. Later, a coworker at Standard Insurance made a few unsettling observations. David's personal belongings had been removed from his cubicle, and his uneaten lunch was discovered in a nearby garbage can. When he failed to return home from work that evening, his wife promptly reported him missing to the Gresham Police Department. The day after his disappearance, David's gray 1998 Mazda pickup truck was found abandoned. The vehicle was located in a secluded, wooded area on a gravel road in Skamania County, Washington, approximately 40 miles east of Portland near Beacon Rock. The discovery of his truck prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area, which included about 20 searchers and several search dogs. Search and rescue teams scoured the challenging terrain, which included the area across nearby railroad tracks down to the Columbia River. The search efforts were hampered by poor weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, and low cloud cover that prevented the use of aircraft. After three days of intensive searching, with no clues to David's whereabouts uncovered, the official search was suspended. Authorities have stated that there was no evidence of foul play at the scene where David's truck was discovered, but they also found no indication that he had planned to leave on his own. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a mystery, leaving his family with unanswered questions. His wife started a blog after he went missing, expressing her belief that he may have walked away from his life and her hope that he might one day return. The case is a collection of puzzling details: a normal phone call, a discarded lunch, missing personal items, and a truck left in a remote location. With no clear evidence pointing to a specific outcome, the disappearance of David Mekvold remains an unsolved and open case.
