In the autumn of 1973, a 23-year-old woman named Suzanne Rae Justis, also known as Sue, was living in Eugene, Oregon. On or around November 2nd of that year, she traveled to Portland, Oregon. The exact a mode of transportation she used is unknown, but it is known that she had hitchhiked on occasion. On November 5, 1973, Suzanne made a phone call to her mother from a phone booth situated near the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. During the call, she promised to be back in Eugene the following day to pick up her five-year-old son from school. Concerned for her daughter's well-being, Suzanne's mother booked a hotel room for her nearby, but Suzanne never checked in. That phone call was the last time anyone is known to have heard from Suzanne Rae Justis. She was described as a white female with brown hair and blue eyes, standing at 5'3" and weighing 110 pounds. A distinguishing feature was a mole located below her lower left lip. For reasons that remain unclear, a formal missing persons report for Suzanne was not filed with the Eugene Police Department until February 14, 1989, more than 15 years after she was last heard from. The passage of time has presented significant challenges to the investigation, leaving many questions unanswered. Over the years, Suzanne's family has endured the pain of her absence. Both of her parents passed away without ever knowing what happened to their daughter. In their obituaries, Suzanne was listed as having predeceased them. The case has been linked to other missing persons cases in the region, with some speculating about potential connections to serial predators active during that period, though no definitive links have been established. The investigation into Suzanne's disappearance remains open and is considered a cold case by the Eugene Police Department. Despite the decades that have passed, law enforcement continues to seek information that might shed light on her whereabouts. Her body has never been recovered, and there have been no significant breakthroughs to indicate what happened to her after her last phone call to her mother. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance, particularly the long delay in reporting her missing, have added layers of complexity to an already baffling case. The official classification of her case is that of an endangered missing person. The overarching question of what became of Suzanne Rae Justis after she promised to return for her young son remains a sorrowful mystery.
