Ylenia Maria Sole Carrisi, the eldest daughter of Italian singers Albano Carrisi and Romina Power, was a young woman with a passion for travel and writing. In pursuit of inspiration for a book, she embarked on a solo journey, which eventually led her to New Orleans, Louisiana. She had previously visited the city and was captivated by its vibrant street culture, spending time with local musicians and documenting her experiences in a journal. In late December 1993, she returned to the city and checked into the LeDale Hotel on St. Charles Avenue. During her stay, she was in the company of a street musician named Alexander Masakela, a man significantly older than her. The last confirmed contact her family had with her was a phone call on New Year's Day, 1994. She was last seen in the French Quarter area on January 6, 1994. Her parents reported her missing on January 18th after being unable to reach her. The investigation into Ylenia's disappearance uncovered few leads. Authorities found most of her personal belongings, including her passport, backpack, clothing, and journals, left behind in her hotel room. Masakela was questioned by police, but he denied having any information about her whereabouts. He had attempted to use her unsigned traveler's checks to pay for their hotel room after she was last seen and was subsequently evicted. Though he was arrested on an unrelated charge shortly after, he was released due to a lack of evidence connecting him to Ylenia's disappearance. A significant piece of information in the case came from a security guard who worked near the Mississippi River. He reported seeing a woman who vaguely matched Ylenia's description jump into the river on the evening of January 6th, stating, "I belong in the water." A search of the river by the Coast Guard yielded no results, and it has never been definitively confirmed that the woman was Ylenia. Over the years, the case has remained open, a painful and unresolved chapter for her family. Numerous theories and alleged sightings have surfaced, none of which have been confirmed. The disappearance took a heavy toll on her parents, whose marriage eventually ended, a strain they attributed in large part to the grief over their daughter. Her mother has consistently held onto the hope that her daughter is still alive, while her father came to believe she died in the Mississippi River. In 2014, at her father's request, an Italian court officially declared Ylenia presumed dead. The case of Ylenia Carrisi is a complex and sorrowful mystery, leaving behind unanswered questions and the enduring pain of a family left without closure. The investigation, involving both local and federal authorities, has never been officially closed, but no conclusive evidence has ever emerged to explain what happened to the aspiring writer who vanished in the vibrant and enigmatic city of New Orleans.
