In the late fall of 2010, 38-year-old Eric Lee Franks moved to Saginaw, Michigan, with hopes of building a relationship with a teenage daughter he had only recently learned about. He checked into the Miller's Motel, settling in for what he anticipated would be a new chapter in his life. Eric, a man with black hair, brown eyes, and pierced ears, was known to have a few distinguishing features: he wore a full set of dentures and had a partially amputated left big toe with no nail. On March 21, 2011, after a five-month stay, he was reportedly last seen leaving the motel. He was driving a bronze, four-door 2001 Chevrolet Malibu with an Ohio license plate, EMH4902. From that day forward, both Eric and his vehicle seemed to vanish completely, leaving his family engulfed in a cloud of worry and unanswered questions. The months following Eric's disappearance were filled with a strange and unsettling silence, occasionally broken by emails from his account that his mother felt "didn't sound like Eric.". His familys growing concern eventually led them to report him missing in November 2011. The investigation into his whereabouts brought to light a series of puzzling and suspicious circumstances. The owner of the motel reported seeing Eric's ex-girlfriend, the mother of his daughter, cleaning out his room around the time he disappeared, but Eric himself was not present. She claimed he had decided to move to California. However, activity on his cell phone in the weeks after he was last seen included calls to various businesses, none of which seemed to align with a man starting a new life elsewhere. A witness also came forward stating they had seen the ex-girlfriend's husband threaten Eric's life outside the motel. Years passed, and the case grew cold, leaving Eric's loved ones in a painful state of limbo. A significant breakthrough finally occurred in September 2020, over nine years after he vanished. His Chevrolet Malibu was discovered at an estate sale in Clare, Michigan. The car had been hidden in the garage of an elderly man for whom Eric's ex-girlfriend had been a caregiver. She had moved to Florida shortly after Eric's disappearance and passed away from cancer in 2016. Upon examining the vehicle, investigators found a small spot of blood on the driver's seat, which DNA testing confirmed was Eric's. This discovery solidified the belief that foul play was involved in his disappearance. The case of Eric Lee Franks is an overview of a man who traveled to connect with his past, only to disappear under a shroud of suspicion. The discovery of his car so many years later provided a crucial piece of the puzzle, yet his ultimate fate and whereabouts remain a heart-wrenching mystery.
