In the early morning hours of July 29, 2012, 21-year-old Kortne Ciera Stouffer vanished from her apartment in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. A vibrant and free-spirited individual, Kortne worked as a dog groomer and at her family's business. The night before her disappearance, she and her boyfriend, who was on house arrest, hosted a gathering at their second-floor apartment on West Main Street. Police were called to the residence due to a complaint about the party, which resulted in her boyfriend's arrest for a probation violation. Distraught by this turn of events, Kortne sought to blow off some steam and joined friends, including a man named Cody Pruett, for a night out in Harrisburg. The evening was fraught with tension, including a verbal altercation at a bar which led to Kortne being asked to leave. Upon returning to her Palmyra apartment complex around 3 a.m. with Pruett, a series of confrontations with her neighbors ensued. Believing they were responsible for her boyfriend's arrest, a heated argument broke out, prompting neighbors to call the police. Officers arrived, and after speaking with all parties, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, they instructed everyone to return to their respective apartments. However, the peace was short-lived. A neighbor called the police again around 4:11 a.m., reporting that Kortne was stomping on the floor and screaming. When police returned, they found the apartment quiet and received no answer at the door. Hearing a dog inside, they saw nothing amiss through a window and left the scene. This was the last known police contact at her residence before she was discovered to be missing. The following day, after Kortne failed to meet her family at the Lebanon Area Fair as planned, her parents grew concerned and went to her apartment. They found the door open, and inside, her dog was alone. All of Kortne's personal belongings, including her purse, keys, and cell phone, were left behind. Her car was parked outside with the windows down. There were no signs of a struggle within the apartment. Her father officially reported her missing that afternoon, launching an investigation that has spanned over a decade. The case, which is considered a suspicious disappearance, has been treated as a homicide from the beginning, and foul play is suspected. Investigators have looked into numerous individuals, including those with her on the night she vanished and her neighbors, but no arrests have been made, and no one has been officially named a suspect. Over the years, extensive searches have been conducted by law enforcement and community volunteers, and various theories have been explored, including the possibility of an abduction or that she fell victim to someone she knew. The disappearance of Kortne Stouffer remains an unsolved case, a painful open wound for her family who continue to hold out hope for answers and have organized annual events to keep her memory alive.
