On a day in early autumn, Robert Marvin Elder, a 44-year-old man known to his loved ones as Bob, shared a meal with his niece in Las Vegas, Nevada. This lunch on September 5, 1986, would be the last time she, or anyone else in his family, would see him. During their conversation, Robert mentioned that he had been hired to drive two individuals to Kingman, Arizona, a city roughly 100 miles to the southeast. He was expecting to be paid for this trip.
