In the late winter of 1988, a trip for a routine eye exam became the final chapter in the life of 69-year-old Clyde Branum and a lasting mystery for his family. On March 12, 1988, Clyde and his 32-year-old son, Louie, departed from Barbourville, Kentucky. Their destination was Columbus, where Clyde was scheduled for an appointment.
