In the late summer of 1994, a shadow fell over a quiet street in Portage, Michigan, with the disappearance of 27-year-old Khristine Renee Smith. On September 28th, the young mother was last seen at her home on Thunder Bay Street. Her husband, Russell L. Smith, initially told friends and neighbors that Khristine had left him after an argument, even producing a handwritten note to support his claim. However, those who knew Khristine found it difficult to believe she would willingly abandon her beloved seven-year-old daughter. Suspicions among neighbors grew when Russell was seen with a boat he didn't own just two days after her disappearance. Compounding their concern, Khristine had vanished without her car, clothing, or any money, and she never collected her final paycheck. As the days turned into weeks, the initial belief that Khristine had left of her own accord began to crumble under the weight of Russell's increasingly suspicious behavior. He was uncooperative with police, refusing to allow a search of his home or permit them to speak with his daughter alone. This refusal prompted authorities to obtain a search warrant. While the search did not uncover direct evidence of foul play, it did lead to Russell's arrest on embezzlement charges after stolen items from his employer were found in the residence. In the midst of the investigation into his wife's disappearance, Russell gave away boxes of her clothing at a local club, further unsettling those who knew Khristine. The note he had shown to others was also determined to have been written years prior to her disappearance, containing details that were no longer accurate in 1994. Years would pass before the chilling truth of Khristine's fate came to light. In December 1998, Russell Smith was arrested for his wife's murder and ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 1999. He confessed to shooting Khristine twice in the head after an argument, during which she had threatened to leave with their daughter. In a horrifying admission, Russell stated that he had placed her body in a 55-gallon steel drum and discarded it in Lake Erie. Despite his confession and an agreement to help locate her remains, extensive searches of the lake proved fruitless. Russell was sentenced to 35 to 70 years in prison for the murder of his wife. To this day, Khristine Smith's body has never been recovered, leaving her loved ones without a final resting place and her case a somber reminder of a life cut tragically short.
