On a summer evening in August 2012, 33-year-old Tamala "Nikki" Wells was last seen at her home on Appleton Street in Detroit, Michigan. A mother of two, she left her residence around 9:30 p.m., driving her white four-door Pontiac Grand Prix. That evening, she spoke to her mother, who lives in Florida, on the phone; it was the last time they would ever talk. Tamala, a nursing school graduate working in the home healthcare field, was wearing a white shirt and blue cuffed jean shorts at the time of her disappearance. The oldest of six children, her sudden vanishing left her family, including her two children, in a state of confusion and deep distress. Three days after she was last seen, Tamala's Pontiac Grand Prix was discovered abandoned on Coventry Street, not far from her home. Inside the vehicle were a few articles of clothing, but there was no sign of Tamala. Her boyfriend of over a decade, with whom she lived, told authorities he saw her drive away that night. He mentioned that she had been acting strangely and said she was going to "take care of business" and would "pay him back," though he was unsure what she meant. Police questioned her boyfriend, but he was never charged in connection with her disappearance. The family has expressed frustration, feeling that the initial investigation was not handled with the urgency it deserved.
