In the late afternoon of March 19, 2013, 26-year-old Latrice Renea Maze vanished from the area of Burton Street and Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A mother of five, her sudden disappearance was completely out of character, a fact that became alarmingly clear when she failed to pick up her daughter from school that day. Family and friends described her as a devoted mother who would never have willingly left her children. At the time she went missing, Latrice was wearing a white t-shirt and black slacks, with her hair down and a scarf with blue, green, yellow, and black stripes wrapped around her head. Her loved ones grew increasingly concerned as days turned into weeks with no contact, knowing that she would not have gone anywhere without letting them know. The family's pleas for her safe return were filled with anguish, with her mother, Wanda Rose, expressing her inability to eat or sleep, and her young daughter praying for her mom to come home. The investigation into Latrice's disappearance soon uncovered a history of domestic trouble. Just hours before she was last seen, Grand Rapids police had responded to a domestic disturbance call at the home she shared with her live-in boyfriend, Jahleel Hoskins. During that visit, Latrice had reported that Hoskins had grabbed her, and she had packed her bags with the intention of leaving. Although she ultimately declined police offers for a ride to a shelter or a friend's house, stating she did not feel her safety was in jeopardy, this interaction would later be seen as a critical moment in the timeline of her case. In the days and weeks that followed her disappearance, Hoskins publicly maintained his innocence, but the investigation began to focus on him as the prime suspect. The case officially transitioned from a missing person investigation to a homicide, even without the discovery of Latrice's body. The breakthrough came when several witnesses, including Hoskins' cousin and a close friend, came forward with chilling testimony. They stated that Hoskins had confessed to them, admitting that he choked Latrice to death. The motive behind this horrific act was his fear that she would report him to the police for stabbing the father of two of her children weeks earlier, an act that would have violated his parole. According to the testimony, after killing her, Hoskins wrapped her body in a bed sheet and disposed of it in a dumpster at an apartment complex. Tragically, authorities believe the contents of that dumpster were taken to an incinerator, and her body will likely never be recovered. Faced with overwhelming evidence and damning testimony during his trial, Jahleel Hoskins eventually pleaded guilty to the murder of Latrice Maze. The case concluded with his conviction, bringing a measure of legal justice to a family left to grieve a profound and devastating loss.
