In the late summer of 2013, 61-year-old Maxine Eve Green, a resident of the Shepherds of Independence supportive living facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, disappeared. The date she was last in contact with anyone is reported as August 23, 2013. Green, who lives with schizophrenia and alcoholism, was known to sometimes leave the facility for days at a time, often staying with friends. However, this time was different. A social worker reported her missing after noticing her absence and that she had left all of her personal belongings behind, which was uncharacteristic for her. The last confirmed sighting of Maxine Green was sometime between September 6 and September 8, 2013, at the B&B Party Shoppe on Leonard Street NW, less than a mile from her residence. The investigation into Maxine's disappearance brought to light some concerning activities surrounding her finances. In October 2013, a woman was seen on security cameras using Green's electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card at the Big Top Market in Wyoming, Michigan. After a public appeal, the woman came forward and explained to police that she had "rented" the card from Green for cash. It was discovered that this was a common practice, with several people paying Green a small amount of cash to use her card to make much larger purchases. While this provided a small glimpse into her life, it did not lead to any information about her whereabouts. Her family, including her famous brother, soul singer Al Green, became increasingly worried. Over the years, the search for Maxine Green has continued, though without any significant breakthroughs. Her family has organized fundraisers to generate reward money and has made public pleas for any information that could lead to her discovery. They fear that due to her vulnerable condition, she may have met with foul play, but they hold out hope for answers. The Grand Rapids Police Department continues to investigate her case, which remains unsolved. The disappearance of Maxine Green is a somber case that highlights the challenges faced by vulnerable adults and the lasting pain experienced by families who are left without closure. Her loved ones continue their search, hoping that one day they will know what happened to Maxine.
