On April 25, 1983, 19-year-old JoAnn Vanessa Mason left her home on Buena Vista Street in Highland Park, Michigan, for a short walk to a local corner store at Hamilton and Glendale avenues. A college student and devoted mother to her young son, JoAnn was expected to return shortly. However, she never came back, and an air of uncertainty has surrounded her disappearance ever since. At the time she went missing, JoAnn was described as a Black female, 5'4" tall and weighing approximately 120 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Her ears were pierced. The circumstances of JoAnn's disappearance are unsettling. According to a friend who was with her, JoAnn's ex-boyfriend and some other men drove up in a car near the store. The ex-boyfriend reportedly got out of the vehicle, and JoAnn was last seen walking with him down Glendale. Another witness account mentions seeing a man approach JoAnn near the store before they walked away together. This ex-boyfriend had a history of being abusive towards JoAnn; shortly before she vanished, he had allegedly kidnapped and severely beaten her, resulting in her hospitalization. Despite this history and the witness statements, he was never officially named a suspect in her case and has since passed away. Her family vehemently states that she would never have willingly abandoned her son, to whom she was deeply devoted. Decades have passed since JoAnn Mason was last seen, and her case remains cold, hampered by the passage of time and a lack of new leads. The original case files, created in an era before digital records, have reportedly been lost, forcing investigators to essentially start from scratch. Over the years, potential witnesses and even the primary person of interest have died. Despite the challenges, JoAnn's family, particularly her mother, Charlie Mae Mason, and her niece, JaQuela, have continued to advocate for her, holding onto hope for closure. The Highland Park Police Department considers the investigation to be ongoing, though no arrests have ever been made. The case is a painful example of how a person can vanish, leaving a void of unanswered questions and a family caught in a state of perpetual grief and uncertainty, wondering if their loved one fell victim to foul play.
