In the predawn hours of November 30, 1987, the life of 33-year-old Hope Elizabeth Anderson of Portland, Oregon, took a devastating turn. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Anderson being forcibly taken from her North Portland residence at approximately 4:00 a.m. She was last seen being forced into a car by a man. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as a white female with blond or strawberry-blond hair and blue eyes, standing at 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 125 pounds. She was believed to be wearing a blue or turquoise sweater with a red and white pattern, blue jeans, and blue velcro jogging shoes. The investigation into Anderson's disappearance quickly focused on her estranged boyfriend, Cornelius Brown. Their four-year relationship had soured significantly in the year leading up to her disappearance, with Brown subjecting Anderson to repeated threats and physical violence. Fearful for her safety, Anderson had taken steps to protect herself, including obtaining restraining orders against Brown and providing police with evidence of his alleged drug activities in the hopes he would be incarcerated. The situation escalated to the point where Anderson had her sister-in-law move in with her out of fear of Brown. In a chilling conversation with a friend, Brown had even stated his intention to have someone kill Anderson, wrap her in chains, and dispose of her body in the river. Ultimately, Cornelius Brown was arrested, tried, and convicted of murdering Hope Anderson. Despite the conviction, Anderson's body has never been recovered, leaving a painful void for her loved ones. The case against Brown was built on a foundation of his escalating threats and violence towards Anderson, his stated intentions to a friend, and eyewitness accounts of the abduction. The prosecution successfully argued that Brown's motive was to prevent Anderson from testifying against him in pending legal matters, including an assault charge she had filed against him. The absence of her remains is a haunting reality in this case, a silent testament to a life cut short and a family left without the closure of laying their loved one to rest.
