On a cold February evening in 2000, 39-year-old Thomas Gerald Klenow and his passenger, Diane Reitler, were riding a snowmobile across the frozen expanse of Tawas Bay in Iosco County, Michigan. The crisp winter air of Friday, February 11th, turned tragic when their 1999 blue Skidoo snowmobile broke through the ice. While the snowmobile was later pulled from the frigid waters by the Oscoda Township Fire Department Dive Team, the outcome for its occupants was devastating. In the aftermath of the accident, search and recovery efforts were launched in the icy bay. The search teams were able to locate and recover the body of Diane Reitler. However, despite their efforts, Thomas Klenow was never found. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a white male, 5'5" tall, weighing approximately 135 pounds, with black hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, black Carhartt pants, brown Sorel boots, and black leather long gloves. The Iosco County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into his disappearance, which was officially reported the following day, February 12, 2000. Years have passed since that tragic night on Tawas Bay, yet the case of Thomas Klenow remains unresolved. He is still listed as a missing person, and his family has endured decades of uncertainty. DNA samples from his father and sister have been submitted and are on file, a silent testament to their lingering hope for answers. The circumstances of his disappearance point to a tragic accident, a snowmobile ride that ended in the icy depths of the bay. While Diane Reitler was brought home to her family, Thomas Klenow seemingly vanished, leaving behind a painful and enduring mystery for his loved ones and the Tawas City community.
