In the late summer of 1984, a 25-year-old woman named Terry Lynn Gayton, also known as Terry Sovey, vanished from the small village of Millington, Michigan. A single mother from Pontiac, she was last seen on September 22, 1984. That summer, she had traveled to Millington with a man named William Bibby. The circumstances surrounding their trip were troubled, as Bibby was reportedly involved in several thefts in the area during their time there. Terry was a young woman with her life ahead of her, described as having blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a tattoo on her left shoulder. Her sudden disappearance would leave her loved ones with decades of unanswered questions. The only account of Terry's last known moments came from William Bibby himself. He told investigators a story of a disagreement that escalated in a remote, swampy area behind a farmhouse. According to Bibby, he and Terry had driven there and got into a fight. He claimed that Terry then met someone she knew nearby and decided to stay with them. Bibby further stated that he had lost his car keys and was forced to leave the vehicle and the area on foot. Terry Gayton was never seen or heard from again. Following her disappearance, Bibby was arrested and served time in prison for the thefts he committed in Millington. The investigation into Terry's disappearance was hampered by a lack of evidence and uncooperative witnesses. Authorities conducted searches of the swampy area Bibby described, even bringing in dogs, but found no trace of the missing woman. Detectives attempted to track down potential witnesses, but they were reportedly reluctant to cooperate, possibly out of fear of getting into trouble for not coming forward sooner. The case grew colder with each passing year. A significant complication arose in 1993 when William Bibby, after being paroled to Troy, Michigan, also vanished between September and November of that year. He is now listed as a missing person, with a warrant for his arrest for parole violation. Authorities have expressed a desire to locate Bibby, should he still be alive, to re-interview him about Terry's case, in which he has not been officially named a suspect. The disappearance of Terry Lynn Gayton remains an unsolved mystery, a poignant story of a young mother who went on a trip and never returned, leaving a void in the lives of those she left behind.
