In the summer of 1989, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a 41-year-old woman named Rose Peterson vanished. On Friday, July 28th, Rose, a resident of the West Side Adult Foster Care Home in Calumet, walked away from an employee's home around noon. At the time of her disappearance, she was considered an endangered adult, and there were concerns that she may have been suicidal. Rose was a mother, and her sudden absence left her family, including her 14-year-old son, without answers. The day after she walked away, on Saturday, July 29th, friends saw Rose walking south along US-41, near the Houghton County Memorial Airport. They stopped to offer her a ride, but she declined, stating that she was on her way to Hancock. This would be the last confirmed sighting of her. At the time, Rose was wearing a blue sweatshirt or jacket, a white blouse, blue or black sweatpants, and blue canvas shoes. She was also carrying a purse and was wearing her prescription eyeglasses. Her short, curly brown hair and hazel eyes were noted as distinguishing features. Following her disappearance, troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post conducted searches around the foster care home, along the stretch of US-41 where she was last seen, and at the homes of friends in Hancock, but found no sign of her. A detective from the Calumet Post later took on an investigative effort, but it also yielded no new leads. Over the years, her family has continued to seek closure, cooperating with efforts to bring attention to her case, including a podcast created in 2017 that explored the details of her disappearance. Despite these efforts and the passage of decades, Rose Peterson's case remains an unsolved missing person investigation, and no trace of her has ever been located. The Michigan State Police still hold the open case, a quiet file in a long history of a woman who simply walked away down a highway and was never seen again.
