On a June afternoon in 2015, the vast and rugged landscape of the Grand Canyon became the setting for a baffling disappearance. Twenty-two-year-old Morgan Heimer, a vibrant and experienced river guide from Cody, Wyoming, was leading a commercial rafting trip through the majestic waterway. On June 2nd, the sixth day of an eight-day expedition with Tour West, the group stopped near River Mile 213, an area known for a feature called Pumpkin Springs. It was here, amidst the ancient cliffs and the powerful flow of the Colorado River, that Morgan was last seen at approximately 4:00 p.m. He was standing on a low cliff at the water's edge, having just facilitated a cliff-jumping activity for the clients. He was wearing a dark-colored personal flotation device, a blue plaid long-sleeved shirt, brightly colored shorts, Chaco flip-flops, and a maroon baseball cap, carrying a distinctive purple water bottle. The moments leading up to his disappearance were seemingly ordinary. Morgan had a brief conversation with the lead guide, mentioning something about taking some time off that afternoon. The lead guide then turned to speak with a client for a moment. When he looked back to where Morgan had been standing, he was gone. Initially, no one was alarmed; the lead guide simply assumed Morgan had gone off for his break as discussed. It wasn't until around 7:00 p.m., when Morgan failed to appear for dinner, that concern began to grow among the group. A search was initiated, but there was no trace of the young guide. By 7:26 p.m., with Morgan still missing, a member of the river trip made a call via satellite phone to report him missing to the Grand Canyon National Park authorities. An extensive search and rescue operation was launched immediately. For six days, National Park Service rangers scoured the area. The search was comprehensive, involving air and ground crews who meticulously examined the river between River Miles 211 and 225, and the surrounding land. Despite the thorough efforts of search teams and the interviews conducted with everyone on the trip, no clues to Morgan's whereabouts were ever found. After six days of fruitless searching, the active search was scaled back to a limited, continuous mode, with rangers and pilots continuing to look for any sign of him during their regular patrols. Flyers with Morgan's picture and description were posted, and incoming river trips were briefed on his disappearance. The case remains an open and haunting mystery within the National Park Service, a story of a young man, an experienced outdoorsman and swimmer, who vanished without a trace in one of the world's most breathtaking and formidable natural wonders.
