On December 3, 2015, concerns grew for 34-year-old Haruchika Miyagi, a resident of American Fork, Utah, when he failed to show up for work and could not be reached by friends or family. That evening, he made his final post on Facebook, writing, "The power of giving is important. Want to give as much as possible. Its called Karma." This was the last time anyone close to him heard from him. His family was unaware of any plans he had to travel to Arizona, and he had no known connections to the state. Miyagi, also known as "Haru" or "Chika," was an entrepreneur and a graduate of Utah Valley University. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as an Asian male of Japanese descent, 5'9" tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a distinctive tattoo on his left arm of his name written in Chinese characters. Two days after his last contact, on the evening of December 5, 2015, Haruchika Miyagi was seen in a rural area outside of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona, over 500 miles from his home. A resident on Med Bar Road reported a trespasser at around 5:00 PM. The man, later identified as Miyagi, had approached her home and asked if he could stay on her property for the night, a request she declined. After the resident suggested he find a hotel in the nearby town of Prescott, Miyagi calmly returned to his red 2002 Mazda Protege. Instead of leaving the way he came, he drove further into the property, crashing through a closed gate before disappearing from sight. This encounter left the homeowner concerned, and she contacted the authorities. Approximately two hours later, deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office discovered Miyagi's abandoned Mazda about a mile from the residence. The car was found heavily damaged in a wash, its front end wedged against a barbed wire fence. There was no sign of Haruchika Miyagi at the scene. Searches of the area, including the use of search dogs four days later, yielded no trace of him, and the dogs were unable to pick up his scent. His cell phone pinged a nearby tower shortly after he left the residence but was then turned off and has not been used since. Despite investigations by both the American Fork Police Department in Utah and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, the circumstances surrounding his long journey to a remote part of Arizona and his subsequent vanishing remain a mystery. The case is an overview of a perplexing disappearance that began with a seemingly ordinary life in Utah and ended with a bizarre encounter and an abandoned vehicle in the Arizona desert, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions.
