In the autumn of 1956, a 25-year-old Navajo woman named Ida Mae Lee seemingly vanished from her life and job at a hotel in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. An enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, Ida was a mother of four children. The exact date of her disappearance is unclear, with sources differing on whether it was in 1955 or November of 1956. At the time she went missing, she was described as a Native American female with brown hair and brown eyes, standing between 5'1" and 5'5" tall, and weighing between 110 and 120 pounds. The circumstances surrounding her last known moments are sparse, leaving a painful void for her family and community. The years leading up to Ida's disappearance were marked by significant personal changes. In 1953, her husband, Preston Lee Monongya, enlisted in the army, leaving Ida to care for their four young children alone. Both Ida and her husband had been employed at the Harvey Hotel in Coconino County. In 1955, a heartbreaking discovery was made when the couple's four children were found alone in a small building near the rim of the Grand Canyon. After being taken to a hospital in Flagstaff and identified, efforts to find their parents began. It was then that authorities learned Preston was still serving in the U.S. Army, and Ida was nowhere to be found. Preston remarried in September of 1955, and their children were subsequently adopted, though they were able to reunite with their father in the late 1960s. The investigation into Ida's disappearance has been hampered by a lack of information. For decades, her case has remained cold, with few details available about what might have happened to her. It wasn't until April 26, 2016, that a formal report was filed with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, and her case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) in July of that same year. The case of Ida Mae Lee is a somber reminder of the many missing and murdered Indigenous women whose stories have gone untold for far too long. The passage of time has not diminished the hope for answers, and her case remains a quiet but persistent question mark in the vast landscape of the Grand Canyon.
