In the autumn of 2010, 68-year-old Joseph "Joe" S. Domin, an enthusiastic and experienced hiker, disappeared into the rugged terrain of Maricopa County, Arizona. Known in the local hiking community as "GPS Joe" for his meticulous documentation of trails on his website, he was a familiar face on the many paths of the Arizona landscape. On November 15, 2010, concerns grew for his safety when he failed to return from a solo hiking trip. His white 2005 Toyota 4Runner was later found at the Mount Peeley trailhead, a gateway to the challenging Mazatzal Wilderness. It was reported that he was last seen on November 8th, having set out alone after his regular hiking partners were unable to join him. He had intended to find an off-trail route to the summit of Sheep Mountain, a trek he had attempted multiple times in the preceding year. The official search for Joseph began on the evening of November 15th, a full week after he was last seen. The Gila County Sheriff's Office initiated the effort, which was soon transferred to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The search was extensive, involving highly qualified mountaineering teams deployed by helicopter to navigate the treacherous slopes and cliffs of Sheep Mountain. The terrain is known for its dense vegetation and ruggedness, making any search and rescue operation a formidable task. Despite these efforts, the official search was called off after five days, having yielded no clues as to Joseph's whereabouts. Not a single piece of his clothing or equipment was found. In the years following his disappearance, the search for Joseph Domin did not entirely cease. Members of the Arizona hiking community, who held "GPS Joe" in high regard, continued to organize their own searches, venturing into the difficult and dangerous landscape he was last known to have explored. In December 2012, the Superstition Search and Rescue (SSAR) team took on his case, bringing fresh eyes and resources to the ongoing effort. They utilized new technologies, including a quadcopter, to survey the vast and challenging wilderness from the air. At one point, an aerial photograph revealed a large "X" made of branches, sparking hope that it might be a signal from the missing hiker, though it was unclear if it was intentional. Despite these renewed efforts and the discovery of what was believed to be his pants and a piece of equipment, Joseph Domin has never been found. His case remains a poignant reminder of the unforgiving nature of the wilderness and the enduring mystery of what happened to the man known as "GPS Joe."
