On November 17, 2016, 71-year-old Rodney Robert Granroth disappeared while deer hunting in a familiar area near his family's homestead in Portage Township, Michigan. A resident of Hancock, Michigan, he was reported missing at 1:30 p.m. that Thursday after he did not return from his hunt in the vicinity of Tapiola Road and Kallungi Road. When authorities arrived at his camp, they found his vehicle and his gun case, but Rodney and his rifle were gone. It is believed he was wearing hunter-orange clothing at the time of his disappearance. The 71-year-old, who wore prescription glasses, had gray, receding hair and blue eyes. The official search for Rodney Granroth began promptly and involved numerous agencies and volunteers. The Houghton County Sheriff's Office led the efforts, joined by Superior Search and Rescue, Baraga Search and Rescue, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and several local fire departments. The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross also provided support to the search teams. Over the next several days, the search area was scoured by ground teams, and aerial searches were conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Unfortunately, recent snowfall in the area complicated the search efforts, making it more difficult to find any tracks or signs of his whereabouts. Despite the extensive and exhaustive search operations, no trace of Rodney Granroth has ever been found. His case remains an unsolved missing person investigation. In an effort to generate new leads, the Houghton County Sheriff's Office announced a reward for information that could lead to an arrest and conviction if foul play was involved in his disappearance. The circumstances surrounding his vanishing are still a mystery, leaving his family and the community without answers. The disappearance of Rodney Granroth is a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the wilderness and the enduring pain that comes with not knowing the fate of a loved one.
