In the summer of 1964, a 38-year-old business owner named George Wright Bugher vanished from Elizabeth, New Jersey, leaving behind a series of puzzling clues. On the evening of July 8th, Bugher, the president of Hand Hardware Company, was last seen by business associates at his store located at 335-337 East Jersey Street. His company was facing significant financial difficulties, and Bugher had reportedly spent the day trying to secure funds to save it. Around 6 p.m., he called his wife to let her know he would be home late, as he had a meeting scheduled with two men to discuss refinancing. This was the last time his family ever heard from him. The following morning, the store manager, Robert Ferris, arrived to find a disquieting scene. The hardware store was in disarray, with clothing and other items scattered across the floor of Bugher's office. The initial investigation into Bugher's disappearance uncovered several strange and contradictory details. Two office safes were found open, and a cash box containing over $600 was missing. Curiously, part of Bugher's wallet, containing his driver's license and $17, was discovered underneath one of the safes. His jacket, pipe, and briefcase were also left behind in the building. Both Bugher and his 1954 blue and white Chevrolet sedan were gone. A couple of days later, the vehicle was located abandoned in the nearby city of Newark, at the intersection of Chapel Street and Fleming Avenue. Inside the car, investigators found the missing cash box, but it was empty except for four pennies and some old receipts. There were no signs of a struggle or any violence within the vehicle. The circumstances surrounding George Wright Bugher's disappearance have fueled speculation for decades. At the time he went missing, he was described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall with dark hair and wore glasses. He was last seen wearing a raincoat, a white shirt and tie, and gray trousers. The state of his office, the open safes, and the missing cash box initially pointed towards a possible robbery. However, the discovery of his partial wallet with cash and his other personal belongings left at the scene complicated that theory. The fact that his business was in financial trouble led some to wonder if he had orchestrated his own disappearance to escape his debts. Yet, the lack of any communication from him in the many years since, and the discovery of his abandoned car with the empty cash box, also suggest the possibility of foul play. Despite a 16-state alarm being issued by police shortly after he vanished, no significant leads have ever emerged to explain what happened to George Wright Bugher, and his case remains a perplexing mystery.
