In the winter of 1991, a 56-year-old man named Gustav Prilepok vanished from his home in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The last confirmed sighting of the male welder, who had a military background, was on February 7th of that year. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were immediately considered suspicious by authorities. His case quickly evolved from a standard missing person's report into a complex investigation that would uncover a story of family conflict and violence, yet leave a lingering mystery for decades to come. The investigation into Gustav's disappearance soon focused on his own family. It was reported that he had been involved in an altercation with his wife, Janea, and his stepson, Jan Borek, prior to being reported missing. The arguments were said to be heated, stemming from Gustav's controlling nature, particularly regarding finances, and his desire for his 22-year-old stepson to move out of the house. The conflict escalated into a physical confrontation where Gustav reportedly drew a small knife, and Borek retaliated by striking him on the head with a fire poker. Following this violent event, it is believed that Gustav was killed. Despite confessions from both his wife and stepson regarding their involvement in his death, Gustav Prilepok's body has never been found. Janea Prilepok and Jan Borek told authorities they had hidden his remains. His stepson was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder, and his wife was convicted on an accessory charge. After serving their prison sentences, both were deported, taking with them the secret of Gustav's final resting place. In 2015, a glimmer of hope emerged when skeletal remains were discovered in nearby Plymouth Township, but they were later determined not to be Gustav's.
