A member of the Navajo Nation, Derrick was last seen between 11:00 p.m. and midnight, walking toward Steamboat Hill to visit his girlfriend. He never reached her home and has not been heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, Derrick was described as a Native American male with dark brown hair shaved short and brown eyes. He stood between 5'7" and 5'9" tall and weighed between 170 and 190 pounds. He had a distinctive tattoo of the word "KAOS" across the knuckles of one of his hands. On the night he went missing, he was wearing a red long-sleeved t-shirt, black "Dickies" style pants, and tan steel-toed work boots. The disappearance of Derrick left a void in the lives of his family, including his two young children and his girlfriend, who was pregnant with their third child at the time he went missing. His family has long believed that he met with foul play, a sentiment rooted in rumors they heard about him being badly beaten on the night he disappeared. According to his brother, there was an encounter with several individuals who were partying in the Standing Rock area. He recounted that Derrick, after being given a bottle of vodka and painkillers, was walking behind him before suddenly running off into the woods. Initially, his family held onto the hope that he had made his way to his girlfriend's house. While there were concerns about rising gang violence in the area, Derrick's family stated that he was not involved with any gangs.
