In the late summer of 1984, a 22-year-old woman named Mandana Boushehri embarked on a solo adventure that would end in a mystery that has endured for decades. On August 2, 1984, she was last heard from while in the vicinity of Imnaha, Oregon, a remote town on the edge of the vast Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Mandana, a resident of Twisp, Washington, had planned a 4-6 week backpacking trip, a journey for which she was not well-experienced. Her brown hair and brown eyes, and a slight build of 5'4" and 110 pounds, would be the descriptions used in the search for her for years to come. The last confirmed contact with her was a call to her mother, a final assurance before she ventured into the rugged wilderness. Mandana's journey began around July 22, 1984, when she left her home in Twisp. Her travels first took her to Walla Walla, Washington, where she visited with friends. From there, she continued on to Wallowa County, Oregon, with the intention of exploring the dramatic landscapes of Hells Canyon. The last known sighting of her was by a worker at the Imnaha Cafe, who reported that a female Forest Service employee gave Mandana a ride to the Imnaha Road, likely on August 3rd or 4th. This would be the last time anyone is known to have seen her. After this point, her trail went cold, and she has not been seen or heard from since. A formal missing person report was filed with the Wallowa County Sheriff's Office on September 27, 1984, after her planned return date had long passed. A perplexing clue in Mandana's disappearance emerged in the form of a package sent to her home address in Twisp. The package was postmarked August 4, 1984, from the Tri-Cities area of Washington, which includes Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick. Inside the package, addressed to Mandana herself, were her driver's license, passport, and a collection of personal notes. The discovery of these essential items, mailed just days after she was last seen, added a layer of complexity and confusion to the investigation. The circumstances surrounding this package remain a central and unanswered question in her case. The overview of the case is one of a young woman with a spirit of adventure who seemingly vanished without a trace from a remote and challenging environment. The lack of any concrete evidence, coupled with the strange mailing of her personal effects, has left her family and investigators with a cold case that continues to be a source of unanswered questions and profound loss.
