In the summer of 1978, a 21-year-old woman named Mary Margaret Click from Madison, Wisconsin, embarked on an adventure, intending to hitchhike to Banff, Alberta, Canada. The last time her family ever heard from her was on July 1, 1978, when she made a phone call from Isle Royale, an island in Lake Superior, Michigan. Mary, who sometimes used the last name Podma, was described as a white female with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a chipped front tooth. At the time of her disappearance, she was believed to be wearing hiking shorts and good quality hiking boots. Her journey took an inexplicable turn after that final phone call, leaving behind a mystery that has endured for decades. The day Mary last contacted her family was the same day some of her personal belongings were discovered on a dirt road off of Riverside Drive in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. This discovery was perplexing, given that Isle Royale is a remote island. To have reached Thunder Bay from the island on the same day would have required a ferry trip across Lake Superior to Minnesota, crossing the border at Pigeon River, and then traveling approximately 63 kilometers east to Thunder Bay. Witnesses in the Thunder Bay area reported seeing someone who matched Mary's description walking along Riverside Drive. A month later, on August 1, 1978, more of her belongings were found even further away in Raith, Ontario, about 92 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay. The circumstances surrounding Mary Click's disappearance remain unclear. She was an American citizen who went missing in Canada, adding layers of complexity to the investigation. The timeline of events on July 1, 1978, presents a significant logistical challenge, raising questions about whether the dates were misreported or if she had an exceptionally busy and fateful day. Despite the passage of time, her case remains open, with the Madison, Wisconsin police department listed as the investigating agency. The discovery of her possessions in two separate locations in Canada, following a final communication from a remote Michigan island, paints a confusing and troubling picture of her last known movements, leaving her family and investigators with unanswered questions.
