In the spring of 2024, a concerning situation unfolded involving 58-year-old Thomas Lee Robison from Santa Fe, New Mexico. On April 21, 2024, his champagne-colored 2001 Toyota Tacoma was discovered abandoned at Lees Ferry in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a well-known launch point for river excursions through the Grand Canyon. Authorities believe that Robison, accompanied by his 11-year-old Welsh corgi, may have embarked on a journey down the Colorado River. This theory was supported by the discovery of a homemade wooden raft, which appeared to be constructed from just a few planks of wood lashed together. Robison, described as a white male, 5'10" tall and weighing 160 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes, did not have a permit to launch on the river. The nature of the raft raised immediate concerns among officials. A spokesperson for the Grand Canyon National Park Service noted that it was not a recommended type of watercraft for the challenging waters of the Colorado River. Pictured with the rudimentary raft were a paddle and a simple, orange, rectangular Type II life jacket. The search for Robison and his canine companion was initiated, but the vast and rugged landscape of the Grand Canyon presented significant challenges. Despite the daily launch of numerous river trips from Lees Ferry, there were no initial sightings of Robison or his dog. Tragically, the search came to a somber conclusion more than two weeks after Robison's vehicle was found. On May 10, National Park Service personnel were notified of a body in the Colorado River near river mile 6. Park rangers responded to the location and recovered the body, which was then transported to Lees Ferry. Initial information strongly suggested the remains were those of Thomas L. Robison. The body was found approximately six miles downstream from where his car had been abandoned. The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office was tasked with confirming the positive identification and investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. There has been no mention of his dog's whereabouts. This case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the inherent dangers of the Colorado River, and park officials have emphasized the critical importance of using proper equipment and obtaining the necessary permits before undertaking such a journey.
