On December 20, 2013, 56-year-old Philip Carl Raush was last seen by his significant other in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He indicated that he was intending to travel to California. His partner reported him as a missing person on January 31, 2014, after being unable to get in contact with him. At the time he went missing, Raush was described as a white male, standing between 5'6" and 5'8" tall, and weighing between 140 and 160 pounds. He had graying, medium-length unkempt hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing gray pants, a beige coat, and khaki boots. Philip, who has been known to also use the name Philip Karl Raush, reportedly lives with a mental illness and has had interactions with law enforcement in the past during mental health episodes. Some of these encounters took place on highways and near railroad tracks while he was on foot. This information has led to concern for his welfare, given his stated intention of traveling to California, presumably also on foot. The journey from Michigan to California on foot would be an arduous and potentially dangerous one, especially for an individual who may be experiencing mental health challenges. The lack of contact since his departure has been a source of continued worry for those who know him. There have been some potential signs of Philip's presence in California since his disappearance. Between January 2, 2014, and October 17, 2014, law enforcement agencies in Southern California ran checks on his name. However, it is not known why these checks were conducted or if Philip was physically present at the time. Investigators have made efforts to locate him in mental health and correctional facilities using his personal information, but these searches have not yielded any results. The Ann Arbor Police Department continues to investigate his disappearance. The circumstances of his departure, coupled with his history of mental health concerns and the unconfirmed sightings, create a complex and troubling picture of a man who seemingly vanished while undertaking a cross-country journey.
