On May 1, 2018, 65-year-old Sachiko McClurg disappeared from her daughter's home in Tucson, Arizona. She and her husband had recently relocated from California to care for their adult daughter, Jeni, who was battling cancer and had become blind as a result of her treatments. That morning, both Sachiko and Jeni were forcibly taken from the residence. The Pima County Sheriff's Department was alerted later that evening when the two women could not be contacted, prompting an immediate investigation. A white Nissan Altima was also noted as missing from the property. The last time anyone had heard from them was around 8:00 a.m. that day. The primary suspect in the abduction was identified as Jeni's estranged husband, Norman Schrank III. Two days after the kidnapping, law enforcement located Schrank and Jeni at a cabin in Pine, Arizona. Jeni was found bound and had sustained injuries, but she was alive. Due to her blindness, Jeni was unable to provide information about what had happened to her mother. She recounted that after they were taken, Schrank made several stops, one of which was at a storage unit. Once they arrived at the cabin, he kept her isolated in an upstairs room. Schrank was arrested and faced multiple charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and burglary. Despite locating Jeni, there was no trace of Sachiko. During questioning, Schrank admitted to abducting both women. Authorities believe that Schrank murdered Sachiko and suspect her body may be in the area surrounding Pine, where he was apprehended. Tragically, before he could provide further information, Norman Schrank III was found unresponsive in his jail cell on May 16, 2018, and his death was ruled a suicide. This devastating turn left many questions unanswered and has made the search for Sachiko even more challenging. The case is considered an endangered missing person case with suspected foul play, and as of now, Sachiko McClurg's remains have not been recovered. The Pima County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate, and the family is left without closure, still searching for answers in the disappearance of a devoted mother and caregiver.
