He was dressed in a gray T-shirt, blue jeans, and reddish-colored hiking boots, along with a black bandana and a red San Francisco 49ers cap. Concern began to mount when Lance did not arrive at his grandparents' house as expected later that day. This was highly uncharacteristic of him, and the worry deepened when it was discovered that he had left his cellphone and wallet at his home. These were crucial items that a person would typically carry, and their absence suggested that he had not planned to be out of touch or away for an extended period. The items he did have with him—the chainsaw and tools—spoke to his immediate plans of helping others with woodwork, a common practice in the rural communities of the Navajo Nation. His prescription eyeglasses, with their distinct black frames, were another personal item he was believed to have with him. The days that followed his disappearance were filled with uncertainty and a growing sense of dread for his family and community. The Navajo Nation Police Department's Window Rock District initiated an investigation, and Lance Scott Armstrong was officially registered as a missing person.
