On August 1, 2018, 28-year-old Samantha Sayers, an avid and experienced hiker, embarked on a solo day hike to Vesper Peak in Washington's Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. She was a familiar face on this particular trail, having completed the difficult, five-mile route several times before. Other hikers saw her on the trail that day, and one individual reported having lunch with her near the summit.
