In the winter of 1998, a 78-year-old man named James Negley Herz was enjoying the freedom of the open road, traveling across the country in his 1994 Ford Ultra RV. His journey had brought him to the desert landscapes of Arizona. On February 24, 1998, he sent a letter to his family, postmarked from Quartzsite, a small town known for its nomadic winter visitors. This piece of mail would be the last time anyone is known to have heard from him. After the letter was sent, a profound and troubling silence followed. His family, left to wonder and worry, reported him missing, sparking a search for the elderly traveler and his large recreational vehicle. For more than a decade, the case of James Herz remained cold, a mystery with no new leads or sightings. The vastness of the American landscape seemed to have swallowed the man and his mobile home without a trace. Investigators were left with only the final postmark from Quartzsite and the knowledge that he was somewhere on the road. The lack of communication was deeply concerning, and as years turned into a decade, the hope of finding him began to fade, leaving his family with unanswered questions and the persistent pain of not knowing what had become of him on his cross-country tour. A significant breakthrough in the case finally came on September 22, 2012, fourteen years after his disappearance. James Herz's Ford Ultra RV was discovered abandoned in a remote area near Kingman, Arizona, a city over 100 miles north of where he was last heard from. The discovery of the vehicle, however, did not lead to the discovery of James. The circumstances surrounding how the RV came to be in that location and what happened to its owner remain unknown. The case is an overview of a man who vanished while living a life of travel and exploration. The last known sign of his existence was a simple letter, and the eventual discovery of his abandoned RV years later only deepened the mystery, leaving a long trail of unanswered questions for investigators and his loved ones.
