In the winter of 2015, a 20-year-old Navajo woman named Elaine Lyn Smallcanyon vanished, leaving her family and community searching for answers. On December 14, 2015, Elaine was last seen by her sister in Page, Arizona. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a black sweater, a black t-shirt, black jeans, and black shoes. An enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, Elaine has black, shoulder-length hair, and brown eyes. Distinctive features include a small quarter-inch scar on her upper left foot and a single piercing in each ear. Her last communication appears to be a Facebook post on the day before she went missing, where she mentioned, “Heading back to Kaibito so anyone wanna text or message feel like messaging lol.†The circumstances surrounding Elaine's disappearance are unsettlingly vague. She was reportedly in the company of three other individuals when she was last seen. The identities of these companions remain unknown. There were indications that the group may have been traveling to the Black Mesa area, Phoenix, or Kaibeto, Arizona, a remote community within the Navajo Nation about 37 miles from Page. These potential destinations are hours apart, adding to the uncertainty of her last known movements. Since that day, there has been no contact from her, and the trail has grown cold, leaving a painful void for her loved ones. The Page Police Department is the primary investigating agency in Elaine's case, with the Navajo Nation Police Department also involved. Despite the passage of years, very few details have emerged to shed light on what happened to her. The lack of information has been a significant barrier in the investigation, and her case represents one of many unresolved missing persons cases among Indigenous people. The overview of her case remains a collection of sparse facts: a young woman last seen with unidentified people, with several possible, yet unconfirmed, travel destinations. Her family and community continue to hope for answers and her safe return.
