On a cold evening in Michigan, 49-year-old Stephen Mark Millis vanished, leaving behind a life and a loving family. He was last seen on January 4, 2019, in Hesperia, a small village in Newaygo County. Surveillance footage from a Dollar General store on East South Street captured some of his final known moments. At approximately 6:40 p.m., Stephen entered the store to buy cat food. He was wearing a distinctive red and black buffalo style flannel shirt over a grey t-shirt, light-colored jeans, and grey work boots. After making his purchase, he was seen leaving the store at 6:48 p.m. and walking out of the camera's view. He has not been seen or heard from since. Stephen had plans that evening. He was scheduled to meet someone in the parking lot of the Dollar General to sell some fishing gear before heading to Muskegon to meet up with friends. However, when the individual arrived to buy the fishing equipment, Stephen was gone. Left behind in the parking lot was his unlocked black GMC Jimmy, with many of his personal belongings still inside, including a duffel bag with clothes and toiletries. His phone and keys were missing. In the days and years that followed his disappearance, there has been no activity on his bank accounts or social media, and his social security number has not been used. The investigation into Stephen's disappearance has been complex and filled with troubling possibilities. His family reported him missing several days after he was last seen and have always suspected foul play. His daughter has expressed her belief that some of his acquaintances, whom she described as a "rough crowd," may have been involved, possibly to silence him about illegal activities he may have been aware of. This sentiment is echoed by investigators who found themselves navigating the local drug world during their inquiries. A witness reportedly saw Stephen getting into a white vehicle on the night he vanished. Despite numerous searches conducted in various lakes across Oceana and Newaygo counties and hundreds of hours of interviews, no concrete evidence has emerged to explain what happened to Stephen Millis. The case remains an unsolved and painful mystery for his family, who continue to hold out hope for answers and closure.
