The Fateful Kayaking Trip

On March 11, 2001, two close friends, 20-year-olds Braden Talbott Lindholdt and Jim Robinson, embarked on a kayaking adventure in Wildcat Cove near Bellingham Bay, Washington. Despite their inexperience with kayaking, the pair set out on a sunny Sunday afternoon, intending for a brief excursion close to the shore. Neither wore life jackets, as they anticipated a straightforward paddle. However, around 5 p.m., the weather abruptly changed; the wind intensified, and rain began to fall, creating challenging conditions for the novice kayakers. Tragically, both Braden and Jim were lost at sea that day, and despite extensive search efforts, their bodies were never recovered.

A Mother's Tribute

In the years following the disappearance, the families of Braden and Jim sought ways to honor their memory. Jim's mother, Mary Jo Gran, along with Braden's mother, Vicki Talbott, began a heartfelt tradition of painting a prominent boulder located above Interstate 5, approximately four miles south of Bellingham. This rock, often referred to as "graffiti rock" or "Bellingham rock," has long served as a community canvas for messages of celebration, love, and remembrance.
