A Promising Life Cut Short

In the early hours of January 1, 2004, the District of Columbia was shaken by its first homicide of the year. Sixteen-year-old Javon Gaskins, affectionately known as "J-Rock" to his friends and family, was fatally shot while seated in a parked station wagon outside the Stone Ridge Apartments at 354 Anacostia Road SE. The Fateful Morning

On that fateful morning, Javon and two other youths visited the apartment complex to see a friend. As they sat in the parked vehicle, with Javon in the back seat, unknown assailants approached and opened fire. Javon was struck once in the head.
